Which RTD Pt100 sensor do I need?

  • Type 16 – Rigid Stem: The everyday choice for most applications, with a rigid probe typically up to 500 mm long and rated up to 250°C.

  • Type 17 – Mineral Insulated: Choose when a semi-flexible construction is preferred or for higher temperatures, rated up to 500°C.

  • Type 18 – High Temperature / High Accuracy: Semi flexible for temperatures up to 600°C or when a 1/5 or 1/10 DIN high-accuracy sensing element is required.
  • Custom built to your specification and terminated in a choice of terminal heads as shown above
  • Alternatively, we have a large range of sensors available to buy online in various diameters and lengths
  • High accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility as simplex, duplex or triplex element assemblies
  • Wide operating temperature range of -100ºC to +600ºC
  • Available in 2, 3 and 4 wire configurations, in grade B, A, 1/3, 1/5 or 1/10 accuracy
  • 316L Stainless Steel sheathed and manufactured to IEC 60751
  • Type 17 and Type 18 sheaths can generally be bent and twisted to suit the application (do not bend within 50mm of the tip)

2. Wiring Configuration

Different wiring schemes are used to minimise errors caused by lead resistance:

2-wire RTD
2 Wire
Simplest, but lead resistance adds error.
3-wire RTD
3 Wire
Common in industrial applications; compensates for most of the error caused by lead resistance (assuming wires are equal).
Recommended
4-wire RTD
4 Wire
Highest accuracy; eliminates lead resistance completely, often used in labs and calibration.

For a more detailed explanation of RTD wiring, please see our guide to 2, 3 and 4-wire RTDs

3. Optional Reduced Tip

A reduced tip is a short section at the end of the sensor sheath that is reduced to a smaller diameter. This can improve response time where faster temperature measurement is required. Select this option if you would like the probe tip reduced.

4. Optional 4 to 20mA Transmitter

Select this option if you would like the terminal head fitted with a 4 to 20mA temperature transmitter. Please enter the temperature range required, for example 0°C to 100°C.

5. Optional Compression Fitting
St.St. fitting
Stainless Steel

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is an RTD Pt100 sensor, and how does it work?
An RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) Pt100 sensor measures temperature by detecting changes in electrical resistance. The "Pt" stands for platinum, the material used in the sensing element, and "100" refers to the resistance value of 100 ohms at 0°C. As the temperature changes, the resistance of the platinum element varies, allowing for accurate temperature measurements.
  • How accurate are RTD Pt100 sensors?
RTD Pt100 sensors offer high accuracy and stability, with industrial-grade elements ranging from Class B (±0.3ºC at 0ºC) to Class A (±0.15ºC at 0ºC). Higher precision options, such as 1/10 class elements, provide an accuracy of ±0.03ºC at 0ºC. These sensors are widely used in industrial, laboratory, and scientific applications requiring high precision. Additionally, we offer calibration services in our UKAS accredited laboratory.
  • What is the temperature range for RTD Pt100 sensors?
The temperature range of an RTD sensor depends on factors such as the construction, sheath material and insulation used in the construction. While some platinum elements can withstand temperatures up to 850°C, the overall sensor design will limit the maximum temperature rating. Please check the product specifications for the exact temperature range based on the sensor’s construction. If you need any advice, our engineers are happy to assist!
